Off Java and Bali entirely, with enough infrastructure to make that workable: an international airport, hospitals people actually use, and Bunaken’s reefs half an hour offshore. A Christian-majority region, so alcohol and pork are unremarkable and the social atmosphere is noticeably looser.
What a month costs
Rp 13–21jt — US$750–1,150 for a couple, per month.
Dollar figures converted at Rp 17,900 to US$1, the rate in August 2026. Rupiah amounts are the ones that matter — the exchange rate moves, your rent doesn’t.
Healthcare
Good private care for a city this remote
Siloam Hospitals Manado opened in 2012 as the city’s first international-standard private hospital, a 238-bed facility in the central business district with 24-hour emergency and trauma care. RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou is the public referral hospital for North Sulawesi.
For a city this far east that is a reasonable standard of care. But it is a long way from a JCI-accredited hospital, and anything requiring specialist intervention means a flight to Makassar, Jakarta or Singapore.
Climate
Hot coastal weather, tempered by the sea
Manado sits on the coast at sea level, hot and humid throughout the year. Its position in the far north-east puts it outside the weather patterns that govern Java and Bali.
Getting there
Sam Ratulangi (MDC) is more international than its size suggests, largely because of Chinese tourism. Direct services include Singapore with Scoot, several Chinese cities including Shanghai and Shenzhen, and a seasonal Seoul route. The network is around 93 per cent domestic, so most long-haul travel still routes through Makassar or Jakarta.
