The choice people make when healthcare is the deciding factor. Singapore is a few hours away door to door — an hour on the ferry, plus terminals and transfers — which turns a serious diagnosis from a logistical crisis into a morning’s journey. Tanjung Pinang for ordinary living, the Lagoi side for managed resort housing. Imports arrive via Singapore, so groceries cost more than Java.
What a month costs
Rp 15–24jt — US$850–1,350 for a couple, per month.
Dollar figures converted at Rp 17,900 to US$1, the rate in August 2026. Rupiah amounts are the ones that matter — the exchange rate moves, your rent doesn’t.
Healthcare
Limited on the island, but Singapore is the backstop
Bintan itself has modest facilities: Busung District Hospital and the general hospital at Tanjung Pinang. The established protocol at the resorts is to stabilise a patient locally and then evacuate — to Rumah Sakit Awal Bros in Batam by speedboat, or to Singapore by ferry with an ambulance waiting at the terminal.
Be realistic about the timings. The ferry crossing itself is about an hour, and door to door from Bintan to Singapore General Hospital runs roughly two and a half to three and a half hours depending on the route and terminal. That is still the shortest path to world-class tertiary care of anywhere on this site — but it is a morning, not forty minutes.
Climate
Equatorial, at sea level
Bintan sits just south of Singapore at sea level — hot and humid year-round with no seasonal relief and no altitude. The sea breeze on the coast is the only moderating factor.
Getting there
Raja Haji Fisabilillah (TNJ) handles domestic routes. The real connection is the ferry: roughly an hour’s crossing to Singapore, which puts one of the world’s best-connected airports within a morning’s travel without ever boarding a domestic flight.
